A bit more information to hopefully point to a solution:
I booted the MacBook Pro from an external hard drive with a fresh install of 10.6. I ran software update, then hooked up the scanner and ran software update again. The 10.6.3 version now also had 2.3 version of Canon's drivers. When I went to Image Capture the scanner worked.
I then returned to the HD volume and created a brand new 'test' account. I logged out as the main admin and back in as 'test'. Worked again. Lastly, I returned to the main admin account and simply switched accounts to the 'test' account. It still works. But if I then log out of the 'test' account and back into my main admin account, once again the scanner fails. Image Capture simply says
'Scanner reported an error'
Ugh. So it's got to be a file conflict or something that's nested in the admin user's folders.
